Hi there,
Hope all is well with you!
(That’s how I start off every email (blind or familiar.)
Pros: You can’t mess up anyone’s name, it’s gender neutral, and it’s pretty friendly, but not overly so.)
I really love blogging (rip blogs) and now that I’ve been freelancing I haven’t really gotten an opportunity to do much of it. So I figure I could keep my quick posting brain in tune with a weekly(?) newsletter. I hope you’ll subscribe!
Each week, I’m going to give you a song suggestion and a recipe suggestion together. They don’t really have to pair well together, just giving you something good to listen to and something to cook. I feel like with both music and food online, there’s just way too much to sift through and I hope my newsletter can point you in some good directions.
Bop
Milania Giudice, “I Can’t Wait To Grow Up“
Okay, hear me out. This song by the daughter of Real Housewives of New Jersey’s Teresa Giudice is an unfortunate banger. (Note: I don’t even watch the show.) Yeah, it’s a vanity project made by a 14-year-old girl, but that’s no different than Billie Eilish’s music and y’all take her very seriously because she’s…goth? Most of “I Can’t Wait To Grow Up“ is bad, I’ll admit it. It’s a song about wanting to break free of the trust fund life ahead of her and it’s hard to sympathize with that in any way. But the song’s intro into the first chorus is pretty magical. She drones flatly over an Ed Banger-soundalike beat “Hey it’s me, Milania, I’m sure you’ve seen me around. You’ve probably seen me on TV.” I can’t help think of it as a pre-teen prequel to Robyn’s “Beach2k20,” where she lazily makes dinner plans over a sparkly track. But Milania’s whole thing is incredibly haunting and I can’t stop playing it over and over again. It’s weirdly only on Bravo’s website, so enjoy that.
Recipe
Alison Roman, Paprika-Rubbed Sheet-Pan Chicken with Lemon
Alison Roman is known for her excellent cookbook, Dining In, and her viral recipes, including “The Cookies” and “The Stew.” I stan! One of my favorite recipes from her is from her book for a roast chicken, which is my favorite thing to cook. 8 times out of 10 when I’m making a roast chicken, I’m spatchcocking it (snipping out the backbone and flattening the whole thing) which is a really easy way to make sure your chicken cooks a lot faster and more perfectly. Roman’s chicken in this case is also spatchcocked but this recipe is all about going low and slow. It’s in the oven for about 2.5 hours but you only have to baste it once. The chicken falls right off the bone and the marinade that it’s in is so fucking incredible. Bonus side-tip: last week when I made this, I swapped out the fennel seeds and some of the salt for Everything Bagel Seeds from Trader Joes and it was pretty wild. Def recommend.
Alright that’s it! Let me know your thoughts and please rate, comment, and subscribe to my channel.
Thanks so much,
Myles
